Robert Rodriguez was born June 20, 1968 in
San Antonio Texas. Robert shoots many of his films in Texas and Mexico.
He began his film interest at 7 years old
when his father gave him his first VCR with a camera. While attending
high school he was commissioned to video tape the school's football
games. He was later fired for shooting them with cinematic style instead
of the games. He later went to University where he fell in love with
cartooning. He invented a comic strip where many of his characters were
based on his siblings. Rodriguez grew up shooing action and horror films
on video where, in the fall of 1990, his entry in a local contest earned
him a spot in the university's film program.
It was there that he made the award winning
16 mm short "Beadhead". This
short film attracted enough attention to make him feel encouraged enough
to attempt a filmmaking career. He shot
El Mariachi on a budget for about $7,000. His next film was
the sequel, Desperado. He got
together with Quentin Tarantino for the thriller
From Dusk Till Dawn and with Kevin
Williamson on
The Faculty . In
2001 Rodriguez's film
Spy Kids
made him his first $100,000,000 film, which later became a trilogy. He
also made a third "mariachi" film in 2003 called
Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Rodriguez operates his own production
company called Troublemaker Studios.
Rodriguez has also co-directed
Sin City in 2005. He also released
The Adventures of SharkBoy and LavaGirl in 3-D
that same year, which is a story based on his son's, Racer's,
imagination. He also wrote and directed the film "Planet
Terror" in collaboration with Quentin Tarantino in the
double feature Grindhouse. A
strong supporter of digital filming, he was introduced to George Lucas
who personally invited him to use his digital cameras at his
headquarters.
Since May 2007, Rodriguez has signed on to
direct a remake of Barbarella.
