Dario Argento was born in Rome on September 7, 1940.  He is the son of movie producer Salvatore Argento.  His career started as a movie critic for the Rome Daily Paese Sera.  By age 20 he became a professional screenwriter and joined  Bernardo Bertolucci in writing the screenplay for Sergio Leone's epic Once Upon a Time in the West in 1967.  He made his directorial debut in 1970 with The Bird With the Crystal Plumage.  He always takes a keen interest in all aspects of the film making process so that the end result is as close to his original vision as possible.  He has even helped compose music for some of his films, including Profondo Rosso and Suspiria.

Dario has also been involved in producing/writing films for others and has worked on three Italian television series.  He has even opened a store and museum in Rome called "Profondo Rosso", which is similar in comparison to Forbidden Planet in London.  Profondo Rosso carries memorabilia from many horror, sci-fi and fantasy movies.

In 1997 Dario ran for political office in Rome.  He is also father to the lovely Asia Argento, actress of such movies as Land of the Dead and XXX.
